A freight train derailed just outside Carleton Place this Wednesday (2008-04-09), within a couple of hundred metres of our house. No one seems to have been hurt, and the only damage was to railway equipment. It looked as if three cars on the siding had derailed, and had then been side-swiped by a passing train on the main line.

Luckily, the tankers were empty, and they weren't actually punctured. It might have been much worse, especially as one was a chlorine tanker.

It took the repair staff two days to sort out the mess, and repair the tracks. The fence around the adjacent private property still needs to be replaced, and the damaged tankers to be removed.

The fence is still down. This is the rear of the four-acre lot at the end of Napoleon Street, just before Highway 7

Not leaking, and said to be empty anyway. Nevertheless...

You can clearly see that the three tankers are completely off the tracks.
